Let the florid music praise!
A Homage to Benjamin Britten
This concert features key works by Benjamin Britten, described as the greatest English composer of the twentieth century, and for whom the voice was the most beautiful and expressive of all musical instruments.
While the cycle On this Island, with poems by W.H. Auden, shows the freshness and the irreverence of youth, Songs and Proverbs of William Blake impress with their maturity, originality and density. The irresistible simplicity and beauty of the Purcell Song Arrangements and Folk Songs show Britten’s deep appreciation for the English musical tradition, both erudite and popular.
The recital will include brief introductions by the musicians. The renowned musicologist Rui Vieira Nery will frame Benjamin Britten’s works for voice. The event will be recorded and later broadcast by the national classical radio Antena 2.
Promoting British culture with excellent musicians and in an innovative format, this initiative is supported by the British Council. It will be the first step towards a festival dedicated to the Art Song repertoire. The artists propose to perform annually with an extended group of interpreters. Presenting a concert with commentary in the intimacy of a small room perfectly matches the richness and intensity of this music and will undoubtedly captivate the audience regardless of their familiarity with the genre.
