Our Virtual Classrooms for young learners

English online for children and young learners

The British Council has been teaching English around the world for many years.

We are now using that experience to offer an online classroom experience that has already proven to be effective.

The English Online Learning platform allows us to safely offer our students online classes with the teacher, as well as accompanying self-access activities.

English Online is offered to children from 6 to 17 years old.

Our online lessons are designed to cover the same skills as regular classes. As well as working together online in group classes, our students also work in their own time each week, completing carefully graded and guided learning activities on the learning platform.

Each class consists of the following activities:

  • pre-lesson activities
  • a live class, and
  • post-lesson activities.

The advantages of this platform are:

  • small class size which allows for more teacher-student interaction and attention
  • the same possibility of progress as in our regular face-to-face classes
  • a rich mixture of activities: live lessons with the teachers as well as self-study activities
  • a safe platform which follows our strict British Council Child protection guidelines.

FAQs

1: What technical equipment do I need

The British Council Primary Plus Online platform can be accessed on desktop, laptops and tablets (when using landscape orientation), via the following operating systems and browsers (either Google Chrome version 73+ or Safari 12+ in combination with iOS 12 and above).

Students joining a live class will also need:

  • a stable minimum 8Mbps internet connection  (we recommend an internet speed of 12Mbs or above)
  • a built-in or external microphone
  • a built-in or external speaker
  • a built-in or external webcam

NOTE: The platform is not supported on mobile devices.

2. How can I access the platform?

Once you have registered with the British Council you will receive your access details. You then need to add your username and password into the log-in fields of our English Online learning platform.

3. My access details do not work

If the access details do not work please click on “forgot password” on the log-in page. The system will send you a temporary password (to the email you used as ‘user’). When you receive the temporary password, you must click on the link in this email to reset the password.

4. I was locked out of my account due to failed attempts to log in. How can I log back in?

If you tried to log in several times, it is most likely that your account has been blocked. You need to for wait 15 minutes and then try to log in again. If that does not work, we advise you to reset your password.

5. What is the duration of a live lesson?

Online 'live' lessons are more intense than face-to-face or presential lessons, and educational professionals do not recommend online lessons of more than 90 minutes. We have therefore restructured our learning content to fit an online delivery model; our lessons have been ‘flipped’. We have taken stages of the lesson that were without interaction and built these into our interactive Learning management System, leaving time in the ‘live’ lesson to focus on communication.

6. Is the English learning platform safe for my child?

Please be aware that child protection and security of systems is of primary importance to us. We can ensure security and child protection standards are maintained through a two level system of entrance into the 'live' lesson.

Child Protection

To ensure we maintain these high standards we continue to use our English Online platform as the logon for all our students, which creates the first level of security.

The Zoom lobby function provides a second level of security: the teacher can check the names of all students before they enter the class. Further settings are in place to ensure additional security limiting recording of lessons, person to person chat, etc..
